It is best to have your bellybutton piercing done at a reputable salon to avoid the possibility of infection. Only go to an experienced specialist who works in a clean environment; it would be great if you can use someone who has been recommended by a friend who had their piercing done there. Check to make sure they use sterilized or single-use equipment so there is no chance of cross-contamination.
Have a plain ring fitted when you have the piercing done; this will be easier to keep clean and can stay in place until your wound has healed properly. Don’t attempt to take your bellybutton ring out of the piercing until well after it has healed over. You may not be able to get it back in.
It is important to apply some antiseptic solution to your piercing every day after your shower or bath. First dry the area thoroughly and then turn the ring several times to work the antiseptic into the wound and to prevent it sticking. Be conscientious with this procedure and you should avoid any problems; your piercing will heal faster too.
If you notice any redness around the piercing, it could mean you have developed an infection, so it would be advisable to seek medical advice. If the wound starts to weep or ooze white liquid, get medical advice as a matter of urgency.
When the piercing site has healed you are able to take the ring out if you want to change it for a different one. Important note: leave this as long as you can to make it easier to get a ring back into the piercing hole. A great idea is to leave the ring in place and get yourself some little charms to hang from it. This is a great way of having lots of changes without having to hassle about taking the bellybutton ring out.
